Yes! You can now access your POP3 e-mail account from any Internet-connected computer without setting up a personal e-mail program. Checking your mail has become almost as easy as making a call from a pay phone. Internet access is now available in airports, hotels, malls and restaurants, and the savvy traveler can easily keep in touch.
You can also check your office e-mail from home and vice-versa with proper permissions.
You'll need to know your mail service's POP (inbound) server name in order to access your mail from these Web-based services. You'll need your password, too, and possibly the name of your SMTP (outbound) server.
Some of these services offer a free mail account, but the focus here is on accessing your main account without the need for an e-mail program such as Microsoft Outlook, Qualcomm's Eudora, or the America Online program.
Note for those of you using a forwarded address as your e-mail address: Don't try to access the mail server for your forwarded address; there isn't any! Forwarded addresses are virtual, and are not linked to any mail server. For example, bud@stolker.com is a vanity address. Mail sent there gets forwarded to my real address, landmark@smart.net.) Always use the original e-mail address assigned to you by your Internet service provider.
Want a free Web-based e-mail address? Register at one of these well-known providers that offer Web-based mail. They may be free, but you may have to wade through advertisements to pick up your messages.
Resource: The Internet Email List offers a comprehensive introduction to over 3000 free e-mail providers, as well as anti-spam resources, forwarding services, e-mail programs, and lots more. Some other lists: Captain Eliyah Abraham Friedman, the Free Email Address Directory, and a Free Stuff site.
