Problem: System hangs on reboot after installing Windows 98. We have noted this happening with Ultra DMA drives.
Solution: Run the utility file sisfix.exe. Download it by clicking on the file name and saving to a diskette. This is a 30 Kb. file.
1. Use the Microsoft Windows 98 Boot Disk to boot from A:\.
2. Partition the hard disk using Fdisk if it is a new drive.
3. Format the drive without an operating system (Format C:). Note that you must start with a completely
clean, formatted drive. If you already have data on the drive it must be erased, so be sure you are
adequately backed up before continuing.
4. Copy the downloaded file SISFIX.EXE file to C:\.
5. Run C:\SISFIX.EXE.
6. Three files will be inflated: SIS98.EXE, SISFIX.EX_, SISIDEFX.VXD.
7. Run C:\SIS98.EXE.
8. Reboot using the Microsoft Windows 98 Boot Disk in Drive A:.
9. Run X:\Win98\Setup (where X: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive).
10. After successfully installing Windows 98, delete the line “C:\SIS98\sisfix.exe" in the Autoexec.bat
file.
Follow steps 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 above.
