About this Web Site

The Landmark Computer Labs Web site is a work in progress. It's the foundation on which we'll build an interactive presence. From it we hope to spin off the Landmark Network, an interactive information source that's still a few years off. We're building the Landmark Network in small steps. Write us for more information if the notion of a high-bandwidth interactive service interests you.

Our Web page address is http://www.landmark.org.

We now a fixed IP (Internet Protocol) address: 207.176.89.96. This is useful for software like Sticky Notes and Internet Phone.

Graphics: We’re using pictures sparingly. 70% of Web users are dialing in with a modem, and large graphics are more annoying than enlightening at modem speeds. Various browser programs seem to display pictures with unpredictable results. We’ll add graphics judiciously as we learn what works well on the Web. You can watch us experiment on our Photographing for the Web and Test Pictures pages. Caution: These pages are graphics-intensive and may take a while to load.

Much of the clip art we're using comes from the garden-variety shareware CDs ("Clipart Warehouse," "Super ClipArt," etc.) available for $7 to $25 at the discount shows and superstores. They contain an awful lot of junk, most of it black and white line art, and we find we really have to dig to come up with even vaguely suitable art. On the plus side, they're copyright-free.

Hyperlink navigation can be confusing on the Web, so we're experimenting with graphic guides on the Landmark Labs Home Page. These little pointers indicate whether a hyperlink jumps to the detail portion [Detail] of a page, to a linked page [Linked], or back up to the Table of Contents[Up]. We haven't extended these beyond the home page because they're here on a trial basis. Let us know what you think.

Authoring tools: We began writing these pages with Microsoft Word for Windows Version 6.0, using Jill Swift’s ANT_PLUS shareware HTML engine. Times have changed, pages have become more complex, and we're now working with authoring tools such as FrontPage 2000, PageMill, TopPage, and DreamWeaver.

Search engine: We found the Atomz search engine in June 2000 and immediately put it to work on our site and several others. We like it and recommend it highly.

Maintenance: This Web site is maintained by Bud Stolker of Landmark Computer Labs. We appreciate your comments and suggestions. Send E-mail to Landmark@Landmark.org.
